College Scholarships and Grants
When it's time to think about a higher education, things such as College Scholarships and Grants quickly come to mind. Attending college or a university can become quite expensive. When finances are tight, it is a must to look elsewhere for additional funding.
College Scholarships and Grants are both avenue you can look for help to pay your tuition. There are a number of other similarities and differences between the two. It is best to look into both to see how which one would be best for your individual circumstances. Although, there isn't any rule against not inquiring and applying for both.
In fact, many students do apply for both. For those who are still in high school, they begin applying as soon as they can, especially if they will be attending the following school year. Applying early is very important regardless if you are applying for scholarships and/or grants. This is due to the high number of applicants; there is only so much funding and not everyone will be able to be awarded.
There are numerous places where you can begin your search for scholarships and grants. If you are still in high school, you can discuss your options with your counselor. If you are out of school, you can contact a financial representative at your local college for guidance. Of course, there is always the Internet; in fact, there are over 5 million results for College Scholarships and Grants.
College Scholarships
Scholarships are a form of financial aid that is awarded or presented to a student by a group/foundation or an educational institution. These are opportunities to obtain financial assistance without having to repay them. Scholarships are offered by businesses, non-profit organizations, for-profit organizations and schools. Most are awarded by the school you intend to attend.
Some are awarded based on merits. Many are awarded based upon certain criteria or interests of the applicant. For those who want to learn more about particular diseases, improve current skills in a particular field or even if you have a unique talent there may be a scholarship just for you.
For example, if you have had cancer you could be eligible for a scholarship from The American Cancer Society. If you have done a lot of community service, then perhaps you should consider applying for a scholarship from Best Buy.
Some scholarships will only accept applications from certain individuals. There is a wonderful program for American Indian/Alaska Natives, African American, Asian Pacific Islander Americans and Hispanic students who can apply for a scholarship from the Gates Millennium Scholars Program. These few examples are just a drop in the bucket of the college scholarships that are available.
College Grants
Grants are financial awards that awarded to those who truly have a need for financial assistance. In other words, if your finances are extremely limited this just may be the way to go. There are several different kinds of grants and the sources where the funding comes from can also vary.
Grants can be divided like scholarships to a point. They can be specifically for those who already have a degree, for those who are intent on learning a specific skill or for minority or student-specific grants. They can be funded by various levels of the government, private and public organizations and even by educational institutions.
Some of the more common college grants are the Academic Competitiveness (AC) Grant, the Pell Grant and the SMART (National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent) Grant. Did you know that if you are the first in the family to attend college you could be eligible for a grant from the Coca Cola Company or Sallie Mae.
There are several grants that are geared toward certain groups of individuals. These groups can be those in the military, doctoral and graduates, disadvantaged and/or low-income. Grants can be awarded to those who are entering into fields that are in high-demand such as nurses and teachers.

These programs are accessed by thousands of individuals every year. Many of the programs would love to receive more applications while others are overwhelmed with applications. Once you start searching you will be amazed as to how many college scholarships and grants are available.
There is probably one available for every person who wants to further their education, they just have to search for it. Some unique scholarships are:

These 4 scholarships are not to make fun of anyone but to make a point that there are programs for everyone. Anyone who thinks that they are unable to financially attend a college or a university needs to think again. It is possible to further your high school education; it is possible to advance your current secondary level of education.
Since there are so many scholarships and grants available, it can be overwhelming when you begin your search. Don't let this stress you out. If you need to, make a list of the ones that you think might be best for you and then speak with a counselor about them; they can help. The college scholarships and grants that are available will continue to be as long as the funds are available and individuals want to further their current level of education.
